To My Soul is a setting of the Walt Whitman (1819-1892) poem of the same title. This text is curious in that it only appeared in its full form in the 1860 edition of Leaves of Grass, appearing heavily altered in the 1867 edition as “As Nearing Departure” before being removed entirely from future publications. I was attracted to the lush descriptions and transcendental thematic content in “To My Soul” and chose to set a version as adapted by myself to suit my concept for the piece.
