Music for Strings, Marimba, and Trombones

Music for Strings, Marimba, and Trombones generates a musical dialogue between a contemplative chorale and lively groove-based music through a loosely arcing form. Following an introduction that sets the mood, the chorale emerges in the trombones. This music gives way to the rhythmically excited second section that starkly contrasts the dark chorale with its optimism. A waltz introduces two new themes that layer and knot before the work returns to the chorale in the strings, this time interrupted by the ecstatic groove-music in the trombones. The piece is scored for string trio, one marimba, and three trombones (two tenor, one bass).
